LIBERTY (BEALETON): 1
The girls enjoyed a good amount of possession and an number of quality scoring chances in the first half, but could not find a way to score the opening goal as scoring attempts went were either saved or went just wide of the goal. Despite a good start to the second half it was Liberty that scored the first and only goal of the game when a penalty kick was awarded midway through the half. Center backs Laura Cornish and Elizabeth Liebel worked together to get between an Eagle forward and the ball, and when the forward went down the penalty was awarded. Goalkeeper Caroline Liebel got a hand on the shot but could not keep it from crossing the goal line. The girls scored the equalizing goal with 8 minutes remaining in the match but the goal was inexplicably disallowed. Center midfielder Megan Dietrich hit a terrific strike from 20 yards out that hit the bottom of the crossbar and crossed the goal line. Because of the spin the ball bounced back out into the six yard box. Just to make sure that the goal was awarded center midfielder Mia Barreda drilled the ball into the back of the net. After much discussion with the Assistant Referee, the Center Referee awarded the Eagles a goal kick. The AR claimed that Megan's shot hit the football crossbar. While that was clearly not the case, and video of the game shows that Megan's shot was a goal, the goal was not awarded. It was a very tough loss considering how well the girls played.
