WARRENTON – Fauquier girls soccer coach Rick Ashley wasn’t happy the way his team played Saturday afternoon on Falcon Field against Conference 22 foe King George. In fact, he hasn’t been happy the way Fauquier has played all week – having now played three games in as many days.
He wished the team passed more consistently; he wished they’d stay focus on the play in front of them instead of seemingly wandering around the field. He wished they’d make better decisions.
But, Ashley was pleased that the end result Saturday was a 4-1 victory, with only 14 players dressing. The game was a make-up game which wasn’t on the schedule at the beginning of the season. Spring break officially started Friday after school and the remaining players have either left for family vacations or had already committed to playing tournament soccer with their travel teams.
“I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen them pass the ball to a teammate who was sandwiched between two blue jerseys [the Foxes], instead of to an open teammate all alone on the field,” Ashley said. “The girls also weren’t playing plays. They weren’t switching like they should. I don’t like to call out to them when they are playing, but I got so frustrated, I did once in the second half. They listened, and we got a score.”
Megan Enos put the Falcons (4-4 overall, 2-3 conference) on top when she scored a goal 4:15 into the game.
“Cassidy [Wagoner] and I had a nice combo around one of the King George players,” Enos said. “I found myself with a good spot and shot the ball.”
Enos took the shot from the right sideline near the 18-foot box. The ball went past Foxes keeper Brieanna Bancroft into the left corner of the net.
Fauquier scored twice more in the first half.
After several missed scoring opportunities when balls hit went wide left or right or over the top, Natalie Bennett scored her first goal of the year when she took a feed from a teammate and kicked the ball past Bancroft with 12:52 left in the half.
“The play was setup when Laura Cornish hit a corner kick cross,” Bennett said. “I was outside the 18 and it was an open shot.”
The goal that gave the Falcons a 3-0 halftime advantage was scored by Wagoner, who kicked a ball straight on the net. The ball sailed over top of Bancroft’s outstretched fingertips before dropping in the back of the net. Bancroft followed the ball, landing hard on her rear.
King George, who ventured into the Falcons’ end of the field only four times in the first half and managed just two shots on goal, came out after intermission on a mission and began to put pressure on the Fauquier defenders.
Senior midfielder Claire Larsen found herself with the ball 10 yards out and fired past Falcons keeper Caroline Liebel to cut the margin to 3-1, 59:47 into the match.
Fauquier added an insurance goal late in the game when reserve Katie Biegert passed to Megan Dietrich for the score.
Fauquier outshot the Foxes 14 to 5 while Liebel had a pair of saves compared to four for Bancroft and one for reserve keeper Christian Porter, who spelled Bancroft for approximately six minutes earlier in the first half.
It wasn’t a pretty win but it was a win,” Ashley said. “I know we’ve played three games in three days but the girls we had here today were fresh. Some didn’t play [Friday] night when we beat Brentsville. I know we’ll have our work cut out for us after we get done spring break.”
The team will not practice at all while school is out and will have just one day to prepare for an April 22 game against Eastern View.
“It’s going to be a long practice,” Ashley added. “We have a lot of things to work on.”WARRENTON – Fauquier girls soccer coach Rick Ashley wasn’t happy the way his team played Saturday afternoon on Falcon Field against Conference 22 foe King George.
