Girls Varsity Soccer vs. Culpeper County

Game Date
May 12, 2015
Score
FALCONS: 2
CULPEPER COUNTY: 1

The girls played great team defense in route to a 2-1 win against a very fast and talented Culpeper County HS team.  Culpeper had a couple of early scoring opportunities, then the girls created some chances of their own with some good play in the attacking half of the field.  They just couldn't quite find the final ball to get an opening goal.  Instead it was Culpeper that broke the stalemate with 14:27 remaining in the first half.  The Devilettes won a corner kick on the right side, and the kick was hit perfectly over goalkeeper Kaylee Lamper and was headed into the back of the net from the edge of the 6 yard box by an onrushing Devilette player.  The girls responded well by scoring the game tying goal with 7:00 minutes remaining in the first half.  The ball was played forward to striker Megan Enos, and outside back Kailey Vance immediately made an attacking run down the right flank.  Megan played the ball to Kailey and then Kailey played a beautiful ball behind the Culpeper back line which Megan collected, dribbled into the 18 yard box, and then slotted the ball just inside the far post to tie the game at 1-1.

The Devilettes ramped up the pressure in the second half, but the girls did a great job of forcing Culpeper to settle for shots from distance.  The game appeared to be headed for overtime until the girls began to apply some attacking pressure in the last 10 minutes.  The game winning goal came with 6:38 remaining.  The ball was played through to Megan Enos but the Culpeper defender was able to force her to play the ball to the goal line on the left side of the 18 yard box.  Megan cut the ball back and just before she was tackled she made a pass back to center midfielder Natalie Bennett.  Natalie took a touch, then played a diagonal ball to the right through the 18 yard box.  Forward Natalie Burns made a darting run in from the right side and buried the ball in the back of the net to give the girls a 2-1 lead with what ultimately turned out to be the game winning goal.

The overall commitment to team defending was key, but credit is due to goalkeeper Kaylee Lamper for recording 17 saves.  But credit is also due to fullbacks Kailey Vance, Rhiannon Begley, CatieAdele Slater, Claire Beaulieu, Cate Boulter, Katherine Trimble, Victoria Kroencke, and the entire midfield for ensuring that many of those saves were on shots from distance.   The midfield did a great job of defending, winning key balls and ultimately setting up the game winning goal.  It was a total team effort, with all 17 players that were fit to play making positive contributions in a win against a very fast and talented Devilettes squad on the road.
